The clinicians with Northwest Counseling Associates are licensed professionals that bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to the clients we serve. We maintain an eclectic group of clinicians to ensure that our services are comprehensive.
Sam is a Licensed Professional Counselor. He has worked in the area of sex specific therapy and human sexuality for over nine years. Sam also is experienced in treating problems of anxiety, depression, trauma, and other adjustment issues. His treatment approach includes an integration of analytic and cognitive therapies that focus on resolution of problems experienced by his clients. Sam is a member of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) as well as the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT). He has received continuing education in sex and relational therapy through AASECT and AAMFT and has presented on sexual abuse and sex specific treatment at state, national, and international conferences. Betsy is a Licensed Associate Counselor. Her clinical experience includes work with court mandated domestic violence offenders for anger management treatment and adolescent girls at Youth Bridge as well as general community clinic work. She has worked in Kiev, Ukraine for six months doing counseling, clinical supervision, clinic management, consultation/staff development, and guest lecturing for a Christian counseling training school. Betsy's treatment approach is primarily based from Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). Michael Powell is a Licensed Professional Counselor that specialzies in the clinical assessment and treatment of mental health related disorders. Although qualified to treat most problem areas, he particuarly enjoys counseling individuals experiencing adjustment difficulties due to such issues as abuse, divorce, job loss, and grief. Michael's counseling approach is Brief Supportive Therapy, which is an integrative approach emphasizing immediate improvement and regular maintenance of one's mental health, and is characterized by a collaborative problem-solving and encouragement-based style that guides individuals in making the necessary psychosocial changes to increase optimal daily functioning. Danette is a Licensed Professional Counselor with nine years of clinical experience. Most of her experience is with traditional and nontraditional college students as well as older adolescents in a university or college setting. Danette's training and experience allows her to treat a broad spectrum of mental health problems. She has specialized training in treating substance abuse issues and disorders as well as other addictions using a Brief Motivational Interviewing approach. She practices primarily from a cognitive theoretical perspective, which emphasizes collaboration with and respect for the client. In addition to counseling, Danette is available to provide consultation and presentations for companies or organizations. She has extensive experience presenting on issues related to mental health, team building, stress management, and more. Additionally, she received training from the Center for Assessment and Psychological Testing to become a qualified administrator and interpreter of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator. Paul is a Licensed Associate Counselor and a Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist focusing on Individual counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy. Paul is a an affirming, interactive, relational-focused therapist. His treatment approach is to provide support and genuine concern to help clients work through interpersonal, relational, and emotional issues. Paul believes relational empathy and affirmation to be the primary catalyst for emotional and relational healing from emotional wounds, internal and relational anxiety, doubt, and depression.With sensitivity, affirmation, and compassion, he is present with clients as they search for answers and meaning. Blending client centered and object-relations theory, along with Affirmation, he relates to each client and family where ever they are at on their life's journey. He does not attempt to become another boss in the client's life. Instead, he seeks to genuinely hear the person or family and their concerns. Therapy is a collaborative process, so finding the right match-someone with whom you have a sense of rapport-is critical. After you find someone, keep in mind that therapy is work and sometimes can be painful. However, it also can be rewarding and life changing.
